whew..... spent a lot of time on this one. i have no way of saying how many hours, i just kinda worked on it off and on daily for weeks. i could probably keep drawing it forever, trying to achieve every perfect detail. i just never know when to stop a drawing, usually when i'm just sick of staring at and worrying about it.
for the few out there who don't know who this is, it's ringo starr from the beatles. he was quite fun to draw, he has the longest nostrils i've ever seen! i got the ref photo for this from a 2006 beatles calendar i've already cut up so i can't really use it for its original purpose anymore. oh well, it has some great head shots of each of them. i plan on drawing the other 3 in the next couple months, but i think i want to draw a non-beatle next.
this was created with ebony, mechanical, and a little bit of charcoal pencils, tortillions, tissue paper, like 5 different kinds of erasers, and a ruler on bristol smooth board. i added a touch of sepia in some scanning program. overall i'm pretty pleased with how it turned out, i'll probably do little touch ups still.
ugh..my eyes hurt. gotta work in 2.5 hours, need to fit some sleep and a shower somewhere in there.
i'd really like to hear what ya think, feedback is fun. thanks so much for looking.

I was listening to the Beatles track Eleanor Rigby when a note came my way recommending don't pass me by - ringo starr by ~beckhanson. If that isn't a positive sign, I don't know what is. (Suggested by =csjwcr and Featured by `zeruch)
it was a hard days night! - excellent portrait capturing the larikin aliveness of ringo. particularly like your wisp of hair off face/background - very life like.

Wow you are really great...I would say it is flawless.I know this shot well it was from the Dezo Hoffman photo sessions,if you ever need photos of the other three Beatles from the same shoots I have a book with nothing but Dezo's photos so I can scan them for you...truly amazing work here....sheesh! Inspirational....makes me want to bust out the ebony and charcoals, but mine will not look like this when done unfortunately.
oh bugger, I started typing then zoomed in, and now I have to retype. sigh. this is awesome! the hair, so realistic, the face is brilliant, down to the craggy tooth, an amazing piece. my only suggestions are, the ear seems less photorealistic than the rest of the facial features, somewhat, not that I'm any great shakes at drawing ears, I stil haven't memorised the anatomy of an ear for some reason, and the background in the upper left particularly, the pattern of pencil strokes there is distracting, his hair doesn't stand out enough I think. but I wouldn't keep working on it, at some point you have to move on to the next piece, this really is stunning. I heard some Zep on the radio last night, on a station that had stopped playing "classic" rock until recently I guess, and thought of you.
